A pedestrian was killed and another is in a critical condition after they were knocked down by cars in separate accidents on the N1 freeway, Western Cape paramedics said on Saturday.
ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley said the two people were killed in accidents that occurred within close proximity of each other on the freeway on Friday night and Saturday morning.
The first accident involving a man in his 30's happened just after 23:00 on Friday before the Durban Road off-ramp towards Paarl.
The man was found dead by paramedics and the Ford Fiesta that hit him was badly damaged, said Wadeley.
The driver of the vehicle was slightly injured and treated at the scene.
Wadeley said the second accident occurred at 11:00 on Saturday just before the Brackenfell Boulevard overpass, on the Paarl direction.
The man, also in his 30s, sustained a suspected closed head injury and a fractured leg after he was hit by a bakkie.
"He was unconscious on arrival of ER24 paramedics and advanced life support treatment was initiated. The patient was intubated on the scene and rushed to Tygerberg Hospital in a critical condition," Wadeley said.
The driver of the bakkie was not injured.
